| Our Mission Statement The mission of the St. Michaels Community Center is to enhance the quality of life and to fill the unmet needs of our community by: • Providing supervised program opportunities for the enrichment of our children and teens • Providing affordable recreational, social, educational and entertaining activities to all community residents regardless of ethnic, gender or economic status
• Providing sufficient financial support and exemplary management of the Center and its activities On May 10, 1990 community representatives, many from the Christmas in St. Michaels Committee, met to initiate the formation of the St. Michaels Community Center. Ray Winch agreed to serve as the first president. Jane Meneely was appointed Executive Director in 1991 and facilities at St. Michaels Elementary School (SMES) provided a home base for after school and summer programs serving SMES children. As of December 1, 2009 the St. Michaels Community Center office is located in it's "own home" for the first time at 103 Railroad Avenue in St. Michaels, MD. The Treasure Cove Thrift Shop is still located in the 3000 square-foot building at 1110 South Talbot Street. A full time paid Executive Director, Trish Payne, and four part time and contractual employees staff the Community Center. An additional 100 volunteers, including a Board of Advisors, students, parents and community members contribute time and skills to further the Center's goals, run the Treasure Cove Thrift Shop and meet community needs. Funding for the Center includes local foundation grants, groups, organizations, fund raising events and an annual drive organized by the Advisory Board. The St. Michaels Community Center serves the Bay Hundred Area in a variety of ways that reflects the organization's mission. After school programs and summer camps continue to be the Center's priority, annually increasing the number of student-participants. Currently, instructors implement programs at Tilghman Elementary School (T.A.S.K., Tilghman After School Kids) and St. Michaels Elementary School (A.S.K., After School Kids) and engage 130 plus students each week. The summer camps weekly serve over 60 area children and the popular Summer Teen Splash parties continue to be well attended. Senior citizens utilize the Center's offerings, including weekly free lunches and social programs. Often, Easton doctors refer their patients to utilize these activities, including a Breakfast Club and field trips to keep older adults physically active and mentally stimulated. Public special events include the summer Concerts in the Park and family Pumpkin Carving during the "Fall into St. Michaels" celebration. In 2007, SMCC initiated an annual holiday musical production for the residents of the Bay Hundred area. We also bring a summer theatrical production to the Bay Hundred area as a community event . All of these programs draw over 2400 concert goers and an estimated 1500 patrons who are informed about our activities. The St. Michaels Community Center's Treasure Cove Thrift Shop serves the low-income residents by giving them access to low-cost clothing and household items. Moreover, the shop acts as connecting place for donors, shoppers and volunteers. The SMCC sincerely welcomes anyone who would like to donate their time and energy or financial support to help us serve the community in more and better ways. |
